The project started on 3 October with the A5 Brass Quintet giving workshops to youngsters in Ysgol Llewelyn, Rhyl and Ysgol Brynhyfryd, Ruthin followed by a session at the Denbigshire Music Co-operative in Denbigh with a total of over 60 taking part. The next event will be the first two of composer Sarah Lianne Lewis’s school workshops in the Conwy area on 18 October. “INSPIRE” is the title we’ve given to our outreach programme this year and, in addition to the school activities, it covers two of our season’s concerts. It is being part funded by Ty Cerdd and Arts & Business Cymru.

The club is already familiar with Ellis’s musical progress ever since his early performances in our Young Musicians Concerts for which he received the Muriel Lewis Award. Last season he gave his first full recital in Rhyl, having won the Rotary International Young Musician award the previous year, and to complete his successes before starting at Cambridge University this October he won the Blue Riband for his age group at the National Eisteddfod in Llanrwst this summer.

The accumulation of programmes, posters, photos, artist correspondence, newspaper cuttings and more have been donated to the Denbighshire Archive Service for professional safekeeping and recording. They will then be accessible for research and other use. The project of collecting, sorting, listing and disposal of non-club related items was undertaken by Mike Theaker with help from other club members over the last three years and it is hoped to feature some of the more interesting material in future postings. The membership card shown above lists the 1948-49 season concerts, starting with Dame Myra Hess’s unforgetable recital in the Pavilion Theatre.
